1. Create your own path

Submitting your resume and cover letter online is not the most effective way to job hunt.  As you have experienced, your resume often gets lost in the dreaded black hole.  In addition to applying online, you should connect with recruiters, hiring managers, and employees of companies to get inside connections.  Personal contacts are often necessary to move your resume up the pipeline. LinkedIn is a great way to connect in your job search!

2. Let your resume reflect the real you

Use language in your resume that best markets your knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Refrain from using cliché adjectives that make you sound phony.

3. Use language in your resume that matches the job requirements

Your resume is your marketing document, so make sure it responds to the needs and requirements of each job you apply for.  The resume should adequately convey why you are the best fit for the job. 

4. Never share your salary history unless you absolutely have to

That is too invasive and is none of the employer’s business.  Also, never bring up salary.  Let the employer do it.  You should always do your research and make sure you are asking for at least the going salary for your job in the area.

5. Never sell your soul just to get a job

You will never be happy if you chase money.
